Junior Surf (Nippers)
The juniors of today are the future of Surf Lifesaving!
The North Beach Junior Surf Programme is a great way to build children’s confidence, knowledge and skills in a beach environment. Not only will they have loads of fun and meet new friends, they will become a part of an iconic organisation that has served New Zealand communities for over 100 years.
The North Beach Junior Surf Programme caters for children aged 7 -14 years old, but we welcome children under 6 years of age to our beach nippers programme as long as parents are happy to help with supervision.
Parents are required to stay on the beach during the Sunday sessions and be prepared to help with water safety supervision to meet safety ratios.
Our training programme runs every Sunday morning from 9.30am – approx 11.30am from October through to March. Our coaches are extremely knowledgeable in all areas of surf lifesaving and we have qualified lifeguards on the beach at every training to ensure the children’s safety. We are always looking for more volunteer coaches - so ask our junior coordinator or one of the coaches if you are keen to help out - we can also help you learn the ropes and get your Introduction to Surf Coaching Award.
Generally, we run age-based groups within our training sessions, based on age and ability. The training of our younger groups are centred around general water confidence and safety. The older groups focus on more in depth skills such as sea swimming and board paddling. By the time the children have reached the last group they will have learned enough skills along the way to then become lifeguards at the age of 14 years old.
Junior Surf Carnivals
During the season there are several competitions (carnivals) for the children to attend. These carnivals are not compulsory but we do encourage children to enter as they are loads of fun, we encourage all children aged 7-14 to participate.
